Full Moon on the Quad Full Moon on the Quad, 或者叫大方院的满月, is one of the most cherished and amazing traditions at Stanford. And it is tonight. There are three types of 'interacting' at this festival. First one is hugging. Second is kissing. Third is making out. I do appreciate how thoughtful the hosts are! You can get free Arrow Head, Hershey's, DoubleMint, and something for after the event (hint hint Durex)! Of course, health and safety are always the most important. The kissing is supposed to happen between freshmen and seniors, but if fact people are just free to put the lips and tongue into a random guy/girl's mouth. It is also impressing that people remained organized and sane, perhaps due to the presence of a number of police who kept cruising around.

The greatest mathematicians ever in historyMathematics is sexy. So are mathematicians. It is not possible to
fairly compare people of different times in history, nor do I have the
seniority in math to rank those brilliant brains and their influence.
However a list of rough assessment that gives us a glance should be
allowed. Here is the list of TOP 20, Gauss
Euler Riemann Poincaré Ramanujan Abel Lagrange Newton Leibniz Pascal Hilbert Cantor Jacobi Galois Déscartes von Neumann Cauchy Weierstrass Laplace Kolmogorov Gauss is no doubt in the first rank, followed by Euler. The
rest of them may not be counted in order of appearance, as I have little idea
how to place them in order.
Most of them are geniuses, and some are even exceptional geniuses. I must admit there are several great people who may appear in the list. The ranking itself is flawed due to uncomparableness. I deliberately omit mathematicians in ancient times, like Euclid, Archimedes, Zeno, etc., because mathematics did not evolve into a serious body of knowledge until the epoch of Newton and Leibniz. Any comments and criticism are welcome. We beat USCUnbelievable! The campus is seething. My dorm has never been so crowded. This is Saturday night and everybody screams and dances. This is really huge. USC is widely considered the best in US and stanford just sucks. Football is just like tossing a coin, not fair, but nobody can predict the outcome. Sometimes miracles happen. Class about to beginClass will begin tomorrow and there's a lot for me to expect. The course load this quarter is somewhat heavy as i will audit in many advanced courses offered by the awesome Graduate School of Business--hard and exciting. Life is comfortable and amazing. i reside in the center of the campus and there's rich community life with Americans and other int'l students. Piano, golf, ping-pong, and next quarter there is hiphop and fencing. mm...cool! Campus is crammed with cars. Looks like everybody owns a car. But not me. There's still lots of stuff to discover on campus. The Church and the Art Gallery attract me most. I'll definitely find out about them. First time in USThe school is indeed awesome and overwhelming. Weather is perfect. The sunshine even repels all the negative elements in you. Everything is just designed and made just thoughtfully.
I got almost everything settled up and will start new life and study. The real challenge is ahead of me.
Photos will come up soon.
Brandenburg ConcertoThe Brandenburg concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1046–1051, original title: Six Concerts Avec plusieurs Instruments) are a collection of six instrumental works presented by Bach to Christian Ludwig, margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, in 1721 (though probably composed earlier). They are widely regarded as among the finest musical compositions of the Baroque era.
Here I'd like to present the 5th and 6th pieces among the total 6, which I find most interesting and enjoyed most.
Brandenburg Concerto No.5 in D major, BWV 1050Title on autograph score: Concerto 5to d une Traversiere, une Violino principale, une Violino è una Viola in ripieno, Violoncello, Violone è Cembalo concertato.
Concertino: harpsichord, violin, flute Ripieno: violin, viola, cello, violone, (harpsichord). This concerto makes use of a popular chamber music ensemble of the time, which Bach used on their own for the middle movement...It is also thought that Bach wrote it for a competition at Dresden with the French composer and organist Louis Marchand; in the central movement, Bach uses one of Marchand's themes. Marchand fled before the competition could take place, apparently scared off in the face of Bach's great reputation of virtuosity and improvisation. The concerto is well suited throughout to showing off the qualities of a fine harpsichord and the virtuosity of its player, but especially in the lengthy solo 'cadenza' to the first movement. It seems almost certain that Bach, considered a great organ and harpsichord virtuoso, was the harpsichord soloist at the premiere. Scholars have seen in this work the origins of the solo keyboard concerto; indeed it is said to be the first-ever example. Brandenburg Concerto No.6 in B flat major, BWV 1051 Title on autograph score: Concerto 6to à due Viole da Braccio, due Viole da Gamba, Violoncello, Violone e Cembalo.
Instrumentation: two violas da braccio, two violas da gamba, cello, and harpsichord The absence of violins is unusual. Viola da braccio means the normal viola, and is used here to distinguish it from the "viola da gamba". The two violas start the first movement with a vigorous subject in close canon, and as the movement progresses, the other instruments are gradually drawn into the seemingly uninterrupted steady flow of melodic invention which shows the composer's mastery of polyphony. The two violas da gamba are silent in the second movement, leaving the texture of a trio sonata for two violas and continuo, although the cello has a decorated version of the continuo bass line. In the last movement, the spirit of the gigue underlies everything, as it did in the finale of the fifth concerto.

I bought a set of chess yesterdayAnd when i wikied for "chess" today, i found the following interesting.
History
Many countries lay claim to the invention of chess. It is presently thought that the game originated in India, since the Persian word for chess, shatranj, is derived from the Sanskrit chaturanga, i.e. "four divisions of the military", infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots, represented respectively by pawn, knight, bishop and rook...Another theory, championed by David H. Li, contends that chess arose from Xiangqi or a predecessor thereof, existing in China since the 2nd century BC.
Mathematics & Computers
Chess is interesting from the mathematical point of view. Many combinatorical and topological problems connected to chess were known of for hundreds of years. In 1913, Ernst Zermelo used it as a basis for his theory of game strategies, which is considered as one of the predecessors of the game theory.
The number of legal positions in chess is estimated to be between 1043 and 1050, with a game-tree complexity of approximately 10123. The game-tree complexity of chess was first calculated by Claude Shannon as 10120, a number known as the Shannon number.Typically an average position has thirty to forty possible moves, but there may be as few as zero (in the case of checkmate or stalemate) or as many as 218. The most important mathematical challenge of chess is the development of algorithms which can play chess. The idea of creating a chess playing machine dates to the eighteenth century; around 1769, the chess playing automaton called The Turk became famous before being exposed as a hoax. Serious trials based on automatons, such as El Ajedrecista, were too complex and limited to be useful. Psycology There is an extensive scientific literature on chess psychology. Alfred Binet and others showed that knowledge and verbal, rather than visuospatial ability, lies at the core of expertise. Adriaan de Groot, in his doctoral thesis, showed that chess masters can rapidly perceive the key features of a position.[66] According to de Groot, this intuitive perception, made possible by years of practice and study, is more important than the sheer ability to anticipate moves. De Groot also showed that chess masters can memorize positions shown for a few seconds almost perfectly. Memorization ability alone does not account for this skill, since masters and novices, when faced with random arrangements of chess pieces, had equivalent recall (about half a dozen positions in each case). Rather, it is the ability to recognize patterns, which are then memorized, which distinguished the skilled players from the novices. When the positions of the pieces were taken from an actual game, the masters had almost total positional recall.
...Ericsson and colleagues have argued that deliberate practice is sufficient for reaching high levels of expertise, like master in chess. However, more recent research indicates that factors other than practice are important. For example, Gobet and colleagues have shown that stronger players start playing chess earlier, that they are more likely to be left-handed, and that they are more likely to be born in late winter and early spring.
From "Liar's Poker"The analyst was a prisoner of his own narrowly focused ambition. He wanted money. He didn't want to expose himself in any unusual way. He wanted to be thought successful by others like him. (I tell you this only because I narrowly escaped imprisonment myself, and not by choice. And had I not escaped, I surely wouldn't be here now. I'd be continuing my climb up the same ladder as many of my peers.) There was one sure way, and only one sure way, to get ahead, and everyone with eyes in 1982 saw it: Major in ecomomics; use your economics degree to get an analyst job on Wall Street; use your analyst job to get into the Harvard or Stanford Business School; and worry about the rest of your life later.
August 1st----Commemorating the CPC's First Armed ForcesThe Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the military of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It is the largest standing army in the world and includes naval, air, and strategic nuclear forces. The PLA was established on August 1, 1927, as the military arm of the Communist Party of China, and was named the Red Army until June 1946. The People's Liberation Army's insignia consists of a roundel with a red star bearing the Chinese characters for "Eight One" referring to August 1, the date of the 1927 Nanchang Uprising. Even democracy prevails all over the world nowadays, Communist Party of China (CPC) still remains dominance. Its position is guaranteed in the Constitution. The Communist Party of China was founded in 1921, and fought the National Government of China (Republic of China) led by the Kuomintang (KMT) during the Chinese Civil War, which ended with the Communist Party of China's victory in the Chinese Revolution. With more than 70 million members, the CPC is the largest political party in the world, with this number being but 5% of the total population of China. The CPC is one of the three centers of power within the People's Republic of China, the other two being the state apparatus and the People's Liberation Army. It is the main center of power in the PRC. In areas administered by the PRC outside of the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, the Communist Party of China functions effectively as a single party state. The relationship between party and state is somewhat different from that of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union under Stalin's successors, in which the party controlled the state. In the current PRC structure, power derives from the state position, but key state positions are invariably held by members of the party and the party through its organization department makes crucial decisions on who occupies what position. However, in contrast to the Soviet situation where the party had extra-legal authority, it has been established since the early 1990's that the party is subject to rule of law and is therefore subject to the authority of the state and the Constitution of the People's Republic of China. Although the People's Republic of China exercises sovereignty over Hong Kong and Macao, the Communist Party of China does not play an active political role in these two special administrative regions.
